Patricia Nelson Graves was the daughter of Lloyd and Mildred Nelson. She grew up on the family ranch five miles west of High River, where she had early exposure to horses. Her father ran a chuckwagon in Calgary for thirty years, seldom finishing out of the top eight.

During her childhood, she had lots of opportunity to study the conformation, action and behaviour of these beautiful thoroughbreds who became such an integral part of life at the Nelson place.

She attended school in High River, and later trained in the SAIT Fine Arts progam in Calgary. An acclaimed Western artist, accomplished stockwoman, and exemplary friend, family member, and neighbour, Patricia made an indelible mark on all who knew her.

"The Sagerunners" won the Best of Show Award at the 1991 Calgary Stampede
