The maple leaf has long been a recognizable Canadian symbol. It was first incorporated into the Canada Coat of Arms in 1921 and was confirmed as an official emblem with the adoption of the national flag in 1965.

There are several species of maple in Canada. The leaf on the flag is a stylized representation of the maple leaf and could represent any of the varieties that grow in Canada, including the sugar maple – a tree that also produces that other renowned Canadian specialty: maple syrup.

The maple leaf was present on all Canadian circulation coins from 1876 to 1901, and on Canadian pennies until 2012.

The 11-point design of the maple leaf was chosen for practical reasons. It was found to be the best of several options when tested for appearance in high-wind conditions.

There are ten native species of maple in Canada, each with distinct characteristics perfectly adapted to the environment in which it grows.
