2 books on the origins of medicare written by Stuart Houston.

Medicare is widely seen as the flagship Canadian social program in spite of problems encountered in recent years.  Of course the origin of the national program was a provincial program initiated by Tommy Douglas in Saskatchewan.  Less known are some of the developments and achievements of Saskatchewan health care the led up to Medicare including what was probably the first free TB treatment program in the world, and a pilot health program pioneered through collaboration between the physicians and the community in Swift Current.  "Steps on the Road to Medicare"
