A note from Kelly Small: As an adoptive momma to one vivacious little man and throughout the adoption journey I have always marveled at the heart connections between all those involved. This art piece is a representation of how the birthparents, child and adoptive parents are 'joined at the heart'. The tree on the left signifies the birthmother and birth families and the weight surrounding the decisions of an unexpected pregnancy and making an adoption plan. It has weathered many storms and continues to grow despite them.
The middle tree is young larch, full of years of potential. Long been my favorite tree, the larch is not what one would expect. Like a child who is adopted, the larch tree symboilized the idea what we first see or envision may not be reality and its true self is revealed over the seasons. Children are full of suprises!
Lastly, the large coniferous tree in bloom holds the promise and hope of budding new adoptive parents. It stands strong and tall, ready to embrance parenthood, and holds tight the connections between the child and birth family. Woven throughout the pieces are words that represent this connection. You may need to look very closely to find some of them!
