Ten years ago, we created a small golf event to honour our son Scott. Today, this event has evolved into an incredible day of laughter, tears and giving that unites golfers, sponsors, volunteers and donors. Over the years, the tournament has exceeded our wildest dreams and raised over $500,000 to help families experiencing the pain of infancy and pregnancy loss, as well as provide care for abandoned children in babies’ orphanages in Uganda.
This year, we are celebrating in a big way and we hope that you will join us. Planning is already underway to make this year’s tournament the most memorable yet. After much reflection and consideration, we are excited to announce that our fundraising efforts will be changing to mark a new chapter in Scott’s legacy and our community.
We are extremely proud of the Scott Smed rooms at the Rockyview General Hospital, Foothills Medical Centre and the Peter Lougheed Hospital, as well as the Scott Smed Centre of Excellence planned for the South Health Campus. Thank you for helping to create a sanctuary of comfort and care for families experiencing the pain from the loss of a child.
As we look to the future, we would like to focus our fundraising efforts on children who would be Scott’s friends and schoolmates if he were with us today. We take great joy in thinking of what Scott would be like as a nine-year old boy. We imagine that he would be a friend to many, and would share our desire to make a difference in the world around him.
We are thrilled to be partnering with United Way of Calgary and Area, as well as United Way Uganda, to raise funds for programs that specifically support children in need. This money may help pay for lunches so that no child has to be hungry at school, or it may provide much-needed necessities like a new pair of shoes or a warm winter coat. We will be working closely with United Way to make sure the money that is raised through the tournament makes a big difference to those in our community who need it most. For 2010, we will also continue to support the orphanages in Uganda who do such amazing work with abandoned babies.
All of this being said, truly, none of this would be possible without the kindness and generous support of all Scott Smed Invitational golfers, sponsors, donors and volunteers. To everyone who has been with us from the very beginning, or who vow after their first tournament they will be back each year thereafter, we are incredibly grateful.
